Today was officially the last day of my summer internship. Way back in March I was able to meet with Lori, who is the Development Director at Mountainlands Community Health Center. We had a great initial interview and I was lucky to be offered a position that included both public health and healthcare administration. I had been frantically looking for an internship to meet graduation requirements all throughout the area, and wasn't having much luck. All the other organizations seemed boring, or didn't offer anything different. When I came across Mountainlands, I knew that I had found my internship home for the summer. They do amazing things and cater to an uninsured and underserved population of Utah County. Their service in the community is often behind-the-scenes and I was extremely excited to work with such a respectable clinic.
After returning home from Las Vegas, I showered up to the clinic in a suit, complete with a brand new tie. Even though I was overdressed, I was warmly welcomed by the entire administrative and clinical staff. The days and weeks that followed were spent in many meetings and I was put to work on numerous projects, classes, brochures, posters, reports and grants. Each of which have taught me a lot about the healthcare industry and allowed me to network and make many connections with health officials throughout Utah.
Last night when I left the library at 11:00 (having recently finished my daily log and seventy page internship packet), I felt a sense of relief and satisfaction. This internship has been difficult. It has been frustrating at times. And it has been a struggle to go to work somedays; especially since I haven't received any compensation for the whole summer. However, it has required me to sacrifice and has taught me lessons of patience and tolerance along the way. It also has brought me many new friends and given me experience that I couldn't have garnered anywhere else.
I feel lucky.
The whole summer I have had the same question that replays over and over in my mind?
Will Mountainlands feel that my services and time were beneficial when it is time for me to leave? Will they miss me?
Well it just so happens that yesterday I got my answer. And it was exactly what I expected.
I couldn't have asked for a better way to finish.
